The Sony Xperia Z smartphone is finally available in many countries in Europe today.

"Those in the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, and Russia should be able to purchase the Xperia Z straight from Sony's online shop and brick-and-mortar stores," writes Android Authority. "The price seems to vary a bit, with the phone going for £529 in the UK and €649 - €699 elsewhere."

Earlier this week, Sony's Kaz Hirai said the Xperia Z would be available in 60 countries soon, and it seems like the country is making good on his claim.

In another one to two weeks, the Xperia Z will also be available in Scandinavia -- Norway, Sweden and Denmark, as well as Finland. Greece gets it on Mar. 4.

As for the United States, there's still no official word. Companies often rollout high-end smartphones in Europe and Asia before they bring them to the huge American market, so it could be later in March before the Xperia Z is available in the U.S.

But the slower rollout may end up benefitting Americans. Rumors say Sony will update the Xperia Z's Android 4.1 software to 4.2.2 sometime next month, so the American version might ship with it already installed.

Reviews of the Xperia Z have been good, but critics are wondering if it will be able to stand up to the onslaught of high-end phones about to hit the market. BlackBerry is putting all its muscle behind the Z10 and Q10, HTC just announced the HTC One in simultaneous events in New York and London, Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S IV on Mar. 14 and Apple will undoubtedly release the next iteration of the iPhone this year.
