Now Samsung has extended the invitation to the public, posting the event details to Facebook and Twitter and touting a live stream of the unveiling in Times Square.
Fans will also be able to "experience Samsung's new flagship smartphone," though there's no word on whether that will involve actual Galaxy S IVs on hand for the public to try out.
This is a huge, attention-grabbing gamble for Samsung. The media will be on hand for the in-person launch, which will be indoors, but if the live stream is played on the jumbo screens in Times Square, Samsung will get plenty of eyeballs that didn't even intend to be in position for the launch.
Times Square is a huge tourist destination, and plenty of people from all over the world will be milling about when the video starts. It will be fairly dark out at 7:00 p.m. when the event begins, so the screens will be easily visible from every part of the Square.
In addition, plenty of news outlets broadcast from Times Square every day, so they may inadvertently carry the feed in the background of their coverage , even if they're talking about something else.
But maybe the event isn't such a big gamble. The predecessor to the S IV, the Galaxy S III, became the first phone to ever outsell the iPhone. The mobile market has become a duopoly dominated by Apple and Samsung, and the battle has spilled into the courtroom as well.
Apple has its popular retail stores to market the next iteration of its iPhone, so Samsung needs to do something splashy to introduce the S IV, especially since Apple surely has something big planned for whenever it releases the next iPhone.
