Samsung delivered the best smartphone as it took top honors at the Mobile World Congress (MWC).
The MWC, an annual tech conference in Barcelona, Spain, awarded Samsung's Galaxy S3 as Smartphone of the Year
The GSMA announced the winners of more than a dozen categories at the 18th Global Smartphone Awards at the MWC.
"Through these awards, we are proud to shine the light on the mobile industry's many innovators and leaders, from all corners of the world," said GSMA Ltd CEO John Hoffman. "This year's new categories reflected the industry's reach into many new sectors and we received more than 600 high-quality entries from across the mobile ecosystem. We would like to congratulate all Global Mobile Awards winners and thank the many hundreds of companies and organizations that support these awards by entering each year."
Among the many categories was Best Smartphone. Samsung's Galaxy S3 faced competition against Apple's iPhone, HTC Droid DNA, Nokia Lumia 920, and anther Samsung device - the Galaxy Note 2.
According to the GSMA Judges, The Galaxy S3 earned the title due to, "its ability to deliver in multiple markets, proven global adoption, and leading edge features such as Pop-Up Play video, Smart Stay screen and NFC, this is the Android success story."
The category for Best Smartphone was different from other categories at the Global Smartphone Awards. The nominees for Best Smartphone were nominated by the judges, rather than open for entries.
Samsung also took the honor of Device Manufacturer of the Year, Best Mobile Infrastructure, Best Mobile Enabled Consumer Electronics Device with the Galaxy Camera, and Outstanding Overall Mobile Technology - The CTO's Choice for Samsung's Smart LTE Networks.
