Grand Theft Auto 5 will release for the Xbox 360 and PS3, but there is some debate about whether the game will appear on the next generation of consoles, and if so, when. Rumors suggest that the newest game in the franchise will launch on the PS4 and Xbox 720, but, according to several people within the industry, the time frame for such a release is unknown.
Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter recently spoke to Gamertag Radio about whether he thought Rockstar's latest entry into the series would be released on next-gen consoles:
"Eventually. Not at launch...If you go back to the PlayStation 3 E3, the 06 E3, they showed Red Dead Redemption, remember? What year did that bad boy come out? 2010? It only took four years, and it was shown, it was shown during a launch event. So that's about the pace I think Rockstar is on. I think Rockstar will have a game before the PS5."
Pachter certainly has a pessimistic view of Rockstar's timetable for the game, which is slated for release on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on Sept.17 of this year. However, as the Red Dead Redemption (and now, Grand Theft Auto 5) example shows, they have been known to delay games for long stretches of time to ensure the quality of the game. We'll have to wait and see how this translates to the upcoming console transition that will kick off during the holiday season of 2013.
A PC version of the game is also rumored to be in the works, though that version of the game is speculation as well at this point.
Given Rockstar's stellar Reputation, gamers can expect a wild experience with the game, on whatever system the game ends up on.
