Sure, a lot of people are looking forward to the Samsung Galaxy S4 handset, but Samsung's flagship offering from last year, the Galaxy S3, is by no means a slouch. The smartphone was, and still is, the first legitimate competitor to the iPhone, and Samsung is planning on keeping it relevant with an Android 4.2 update.
The usually-reliable folks over at SamMobile state that, "Android 4.2.1 is still under testing phase by Samsung and they will release the official final Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S III after the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S IV."
Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy S4 at an event sometime halfway through March, and follow up with launches in different regions into the beginning of summer.
SamMobile has also taken the time to grab the Android 4.2.1 firmware and make it available to download. The firmware comes via XDA Developers member Saturn and is by no means official. If you're eager to see what Android 4.2 on the Galaxy S3 looks like, then you can head over here to grab it, but make sure you know what you're doing.
"We have repackaged this firmware into an ODIN Flashable firmware ourselves from the dump files we took from Saturn's device. This firmware will increase your binary counter, if you don't know what this means then don't flash this firmware. This Firmware will also change your device status to Modified. This firmware doesn't contain any Modem so the Modem you are using before flashing this firmware will remain. This is a PRE-RELEASE version so not official from KIES. As this is a PRE-RELEASE firmware some minor bugs are to expect," SamMobile warns.
"We have FULLY TESTED this firmware and this firmware works perfectly as any other official firmware," SamMobile adds.
Android 4.2 for the Galaxy S3 includes improved notifications, more voice commands, and a lockscreen with widgets.
Let us know if you flash your Galaxy S3 to Android 4.2 and what you think of it.
