While the console of the PlayStation 4 (PS4) didn't make the debut on Wednesday night, the new DualShock controller did.
The DualShock 4 controller is wireless, and Sony hopes it will deliver new gameplay experiences "that have never been possible before," as PlayStation Blog's Shuhei Yoshid, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, wrote,.
"DualShock 4 incorporates a new highly sensitive six-axis sensor, as well as a touch pad located on the front of the controller, which offers gamers completely new ways to play and interact with games," Sony noted in a statement.
And how are others reviewing the new DualShock 4 controller?
"Say goodbye to the start and select buttons: those old standards now live within the options button placed near the top," wrote CNET's Christopher MacManus. "Nearby, a share button gives gamers the ability to stream live gameplay to UStream, upload recorded gameplay videos to Facebook, and other social options. Pictures provided by Sony indicate that the DS4 may sport a rubber (or etched plastic) rear for enhanced gripping and less fumbles."
"Not surprisingly, Sony's touting the addition of the "Share" button as one of the biggest features of the DualShock 4, allowing players to easily send tidbits like video clips and screenshots to places such as Ustream, Facebook and, naturally, the firm's own PlayStation Network," reported Edgar Alvarez of Engadget.
"I like the new shape of the PS4 controller, and I think there will be interesting applications for both touch and motion though, like 'social' I find these to be peripheral even to a console peripheral," wrote Erik Kain, contributor to Forbes.
Kain added he isn't sure if he likes the new DualShock 4 controller until he personally gets his hands on it. He added, "...but I like the look of it, and I'm glad that while they've certainly innovated with the design, they haven't strayed too far from its roots.
Kyle Orland of ArsTechnica wrote about the specifications of the controller, namely the size. "Sony has made it clear that the specs for all of the PS4 hardware are subject to change at any time, so this information might not even be valid by the time the PS4 launches. There's also some margin of error here, of course, owing to the vagaries of estimating sizes based on photos and accurate cropping."
"After nearly two decades of being unchanged (remember the PS3's "boomerang" prototype? The Dual Shock 4 features some major upgrades: including a touch panel, a PlayStation Move-type light sensor to go with a new and improved Move camera and other features such as a Share button and headphone jack," wrote GQ Magazine's Oliver Franklin. "It's a smart move; rather than force one gimmick onto players, the new Dualshock will allow developers to use it as they choose."
