While they didn't make an appearance at yesterday's big Sony event, CD Projekt RED has announced today that "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" will be releasing on the PlayStation 4.

The upcoming game is the third and final installment in the award winning Witcher series, and CD Projekt is promising it to be a, "triumphant finish to the legend of Geralt of Rivia."

According to the developer, they were among one of the few studios granted early access to the PlayStation 4, a fact they were asked to keep private until now.

"We were thrilled when asked, several months ago, to be one of the developers who were granted early access to the PlayStation 4. It was an exciting moment to be invited to be in the company of other legendary developers like  Bethesda, EA, LucasArts, Ubisoft or Activision as one of the teams working on titles shipping early in the PlayStation 4's lifecycle. Of course, we couldn't reveal any specifics about this to our fans, even though many journalists and forum members asked about when and how The Witcher might show up on Sony's console," said Adam Badowski, head of CD Projekt RED.

Badowski also stated that the new console features some "innovative solutions" that they're looking forward to implementing in the upcoming game. The studio believes that their in-house engine, the REDengine 3, has what it takes to push the new hardware to its limits, an impressive feat given what was on display yesterday.

The Witcher 3 is still scheduled for a vague 2014 release window, although current rumors put the launch of the PS4 during this upcoming holiday season. The story-driven RPG once again follows Geralt of Rivia, a legendary monster hunter. The game will feature an open world setting, allowing players to explore "war-ravaged lands, sail misty waters, and track down dangerous beasts for money."

While very little else of the game is currently known, CD Projekt has stated that it will feature an improved combat system and a non-linear, standalone story that will be accessible for both fans and newcomers alike.

The Witcher 3 will be released simultaneously on the PS4, PC, and possibly whatever next-gen system Microsoft is working on.
