HTC finally unveiled their much-anticipated HTC One smartphone (formerly referred to as the M7), and it looks like a surefire winner - that is until you take into account all the other smartphones out there. One of its biggest competitors will be the Samsung Galaxy S4, and while there is nothing official about that handset yet, here's how to the two stack up: spec vs. rumored specs.
The HTC One helps kick off what looks like the new industry standard: a 5-inch 1080p Full HD display putting out a eye-pleasing 468 ppi. Under the hood, the HTC One will come with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor clocked at around 1.7GHz and 2GB RAM. The handset will be available in 32GB and 64GB variants, and will support 4G LTE where available. The smartphone runs Android Jelly Bean and comes with the new HTC Sense UI and HTC Blinkfeed content service.
HTC has opted to use three 4.3-megapixel sensors in the rear-facing camera instead of one 13-megapixel sensor, and has taken to calling it a "13-ultrapixel" camera. The front-facing camera is 2.1 megapixels, and both cameras can record in 1080p.
The HTC One will debut in the United States in March, through AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. The 32GB model will cost $199.99, and the 64GB version will run $299.99 - all after two-year contracts, of course. Verizon is expected to get its own version of the HTC One, although it hasn't been disclosed as of yet.
Samsung's Galaxy S4 handset will also be sporting a 5-inch 1080p display as well. The processor is said to be a quad-core Exynos 5440 clocked at around 1.9GHz, although there have also been rumblings that Samsung could throw in its Exynos Octa eight-core chipset. A 13-megapixel camera and 2GB RAM are expected, as is Android 4.2. There's also talk of 5G Wi-Fi.
The Galaxy S4, however, could come with some incredibly novel features such as touchless gesturing and the ability to scroll through the screen using only your eyes. While the HTC One's form factor is similar to the iPhone, the Galaxy S4 is rumored to resemble the Galaxy Tab 8.0.
Samsung is expected to officially announce the Galaxy S4 in mid-March, so until then, treat these specs as rumors. Still it's hard to not see that these two smartphones look similarly matched on paper, and the only way to really decide may be to hold them in your hand - when they release, of course.
