The likelihood for Microsoft to develop a "Mini" version of their Surface tablet is possible, according to a Microsoft executive.

Microsoft launched the Surface with Windows RT tablet in October, and while sales numbers have not disclosed, the company continued with their tablet plans with the Surface with Windows 8 Pro (Surface Pro).

During a Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference, Microsoft Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Peter Klein said there is potential to enter in the smaller tablet market.

"We're set up for that," said Klein on making different tablet sizes. "The notion of flexibility and scalability of the operating system is intrinsic to our strategy."

The Microsoft CFO noted the company has the "same core code base" that could devices from four-inches to 27-inches and "everything in between."

"So I think we are well set up to respond to demand as we see it. We can deliver a versatile set of experiences across form factors, whether they're four-inch, five-inch, seven-inch, 10-inch or 13-inch," said Klein.

The idea of creating a Surface tablet, smaller than their current 10.6-inch tablet, could put Microsoft in competition against Apple's iPad Mini and Amazon's Fire HD.

The news of a possible Surface 'Mini' comes a week after the Surface Pro made its debut. The 128GB tablet of the Surface Pro immediately sold out, but similar to the Surface with Windows RT, sales figures have not been released.

The Microsoft Surface with Windows 8 Pro is priced at $899 for the 64GB model and $999 for the 128GB model.
