While it's pretty much a given, Activision confirmed a new Call of Duty game for 2013 during an earnings call with investors. But the CEO and CFO of Activision chimed in, stating that next-gen consoles like the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 could hurt sales. Still, they say the game will be better than than any previous installment.
"There is increased volatility this year due to the ongoing console transition, which makes predicting the future more challenging than during normal years in the cycle. For Call of Duty, consistent with our past practices, we are planning for the the mainline release in Q4 to be down versus 2012," said Activision CFO Dennis Durkin.
So there you have it folks. A new Call of Duty will hit retail shelves in Q4 2013. It's not 100 percent clear whether Activision is referring to low sales because it believes gamers would rather buy next-gen games, or, if the new Call of Duty is on next-gen consoles, that there simply won't be enough people with the Xbox 720 or PlayStation 4 to drive sales.
Activision has alternated between Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Black Ops games, and since 2012 gave us Black Ops 2, there's a good chance Activision is referring to a Modern Warfare 4. Of course, we'll have to wait and see, as Activision hasn't yet released any details other than that a Call of Duty is in the works.
"The Call of Duty franchise continues to set the bar for innovation and we expect the new Call of Duty game in development for 2013 to raise that bar even higher," Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg confidently stated.
Stay tuned as details about the next Call of Duty begin trickling out as the year goes on and whether or not it truly does raise the bar even higher.
