Is Nokia getting in on the tablet craze?

Company CEO Stephen Elop hinted the company could be looking into producing a tablet running on Windows 8.

"We haven't announced tablets at this point but it's something we're clearly looking at very closely," said Elop, speaking to journalists in Australia.

"We're studying very closely the market right now. Microsoft has introduced the Surface tablet so we're trying to learn from that and understanding what's the right way to participate and in what point of time but we haven't announced anything at this point."

When pressed on the issue, Elop added, "There are some great opportunities for a 7-inch tablet, there's great opportunities for a larger one."

As to which operating system a hypothetically Nokia tablet would run, Elop seems to favor Windows 8.

"We could consider any option. I think it is important to note though that the opportunity for companionship is something that every consumer is looking for and so when you think about the Lumia 920 running on Windows Phone, having a Windows Phone or a Windows PC or an Xbox or any of those things as part of the broad family is something that will give us the opportunity to give a pretty integrated experience," he said. "So our first focus in what we look at is clearly in the Microsoft family."

Nokia used to be a much larger player in the mobile phone world, and its older models are still lauded for their durability and seeming indestructability. Lately, Nokia has been breaking back into the mobile phone market with its Lumia 920, a well-received Windows Phone.

No word from Elop on whether a Nokia tablet would be part of the Lumia line of devices.
