There's not much known about the upcoming Google-Motorola "X" smartphone, but one thing's for certain - it should be quite high-profile given the big names involved. While most expect the first official nod to come around Google's I/O conference in May, a job listing sighting essentially confirms that the smartphone is in the works.
The folks over at Phandroid were able to spot a LinkedIn job listing for "Sr. Director Product Management, X-Phone" posted by Motorola Mobility in Sunnyvale, Calif. The listing has been pulled down, but a screen shot taken by Phandroid tells us that whoever lands the job will be working on "Next Generation SmartPhone Platform."
While it hasn't been confirmed by Google, the tech giant usually uses its Google I/O conference to introduce its latest offerings. Last year, attendees got a first glimpse at the LG Nexus 4 and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Many expect the Motorola X-Phone and Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie to make their first appearances at Google I/O 2013, which takes place May 15-17.
Other than that, there's practically no details on the X-Phone except some hints Google co-founder Larry Page dropped in a recent statement as to what features are on top of Google's and Motorola's list: battery life and durability.
"Think about your device. Battery life is a huge issue. You shouldn't have to worry about constantly recharging your phone. When you drop your phone, it shouldn't go splat," Page said.
Google's last flagship smartphone, the LG Nexus 4, came with the ability to be wirelessly charged, and expect Google to more aggressively promote the feature with the X-Phone. Page's hint that a smartphone should be able to withstand drops may mean the X-Phone will be one hardy handset. In either case, if Google and Motorola deliver on other fronts, it will be hard for competitors to go head to head with a smartphone that will alleviate consumer concerns about battery life and longevity.
