The biggest news to come out of Nintendo's Direct event was not the news update on its new Zelda title or the Virtual Console update: it was the announcement that a "Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker" HD remake was in the works for the Wii U and that it would launch in the fall.

The fact that the coveted title is being brought back for a new generation of players is major, but the announcement reveals a great deal about Nintendo as well. In 2011, Nintendo released a remake of the venerated "Ocarina of Time" for the 3DS. While Nintendo had previously ported original versions of Zelda titles to new consoles, this was the first time the developer actually remade the title with visual enhancements and new features for a new console. Many wondered whether this was the only time that Nintendo would set out on such an endeavor, but the announcement of "Wind Waker" clearly indicates that this may be a longer term project for Nintendo.

This has interesting implications. Back in June 2012, Nintendo stated that it was considering making a remake of "Link to the Past" or "Majora's Mask." The latter option has been championed by a number of fans over the last year. Back in the summer of 2012, a team of "industry veterans" created a video showcasing what an HD version of "Majora's Mask" could look like. This prompted an online petition to get the remake made. The petition is seeking 5,000 votes and is currently coming up on 700 total votes as of Thursday morning.

The announcement of the "Wind Waker" remake indicates Nintendo's desire to refresh old experiences for the new generation and it is now a greater possibility that Nintendo could listen to fans' demands and remake "Majora's Mask."
