Apple's iPhone, while losing some steam against fellow Android competitors, is still the most recognizable poster child for smartphones everywhere. This year Apple will be releasing more iPhone models than ever before, including a mid-range variant that will utilize in-cell touch screen technology.

According to DigiTimes, known for its "industry sources," Apple will be launching two iPhones this year, with one of them targeting the mid-range market. The report also states that a larger-than-4-inch iPhone is in the works, but won't be coming out this year as many reports indicated.

"Previously it was said that Apple would release a lower-cost version of its iPhone with a bigger screen in 2013. But the sources claimed that Apple is indeed developing an iPhone with a bigger screen, but that will not be among the models to be launched this year," DigiTimes writes.

"However, the sources noted it is still yet to be determined if Apple will have adequate supply of in-cell touch panels in 2013 for a lower-cost version of the iPhone due to mass production issues from the technology in 2012. The iPhone 5 took a hit in sales during 2012 as a result of poor yields for in-cell technology, but the sources are now saying those yields are improving."

In-cell touch displays are thinner than normal touch screens, and can be found in the iPhone 5.

Apple is expected to release the next wave of iPhones in the United States near the beginning of summer 2013. It will enter the market amid a flurry of high-end Android smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S4.
