The tablet wars continue, and this time Sony is taking on Apple and Google for a piece of the market pie. PC World reports that Sony's Xperia Z tablet was announced today for Japanese consumers in a press release on the company's official site, and while no North American release was mentioned, it's safe to bet that the 10.1-inch device will make its way to the U.S. in due time. But how does the upcoming tablet stack up against the iPad mini and Google Nexus 7? Let's take a look.

Sony Xperia Z Tablet

The Xperia Z tablet weighs in at 495 grams with a 6.9 millimeter thick case. Internally, the device features a quad-core 1.5GHz processor, which compliments an 8-megapixel camera, and runs Android 4.1. The 10.1-inch screen displays at a 1920x1200 resolution. Features include LTE and Near Field Communication (NFC), and while we aren't aware of any pricing decisions, the press release indicates that both white and black versions of the tablet will be available.

iPad mini

Apple's petite iPad sports a 7.9-inch LED-backlit Multi-Touch display with IPS technology, a 1024 x 768, fingerprint-resistant coating, a front-facing 1.2 Facetime HD camera, and a 5-megapixel iSight Camera. Powered by a dual-core A5 processor, the tablet is Bluetooth capable and is available in a LTE variant. The LTE device is available starting at $459 for the 16GB, $550 for the 32GB, and $659 for the 64GB version.

Google Nexus 7

The Google Nexus 7 ships with a 7-inch screen with a 1280x800 resolution and carries an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, and a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera. As an Android device, the Nexus runs Jelly Bean and features NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity. Consumers can get their hands on the 16GB model for $199.99, the 32GB for $249.99, and a cellular 32GB for $299.99.
