As 2012 saw Android smartphones gain a much-needed edge against Apple's iPhone dominance, 2013 will offer even more high-end Android smartphones than ever before. Google is said to be working with Motorola on a new handset outside of its popular Nexus lineup. Dubbed the "X," the smartphone will be developed by Motorola and will likely be unveiled at Google's I/O Conference in May.
Website TheDroidGuy reports that rumors are trickling out of Droid Forums that the Google X phone will indeed not be a Nexus-branded device, and should be the first handset to feature Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. It's also said that the handset will be made available through multiple carriers.
None of this has been officially confirmed by Google or Motorola, so we'll most likely have to wait until Google's I/O Conference, which takes place May 15-17, until we can be sure. .
The Google X Phone was first reported on by The Wall Street Journal back in Dec. 2012.
"Engineers at Motorola are hard at work on a sophisticated handset, to be released next year, that parent Google Inc. hopes will provide more potent competition for devices like Apple Inc.'s iPhone," The Wall Street Journal wrote.
Following the trend of battling the Apple iPhone with a larger screen, the Google-Motorola X Phone should come with a 5-inch display which will probably be Full HD-1080p capable. Expect all the usual bells and whistles such as NFC, a high-megapixel-count camera, and LTE.
The same WSJ report mentioned above also states that Google and Motorola will also release an X tablet around the same time as the X smartphone.
