The Nintendo Wii U appears to have had a highly successful launch but a great deal of their titles were from third party developers.
The company has been known for its top notch first party content, but outside New Super Mario Bros. U the new console's first party content has been rather sparse.
The Wii launched with Zelda; Twilight Princess and the Nintendo 64 launched with Super Mario 64. However, Nintendo fans may not have to wait that long for a major title as it seems that the next 3d Mario title and the highly anticipated Wii U Zelda are on their way.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata stated during an interview with IGN that "We will announce the launch schedules for new 3D Zelda and Mario games in the future, but this is not the right opportunity for me to indicate when we will make such announcements."
The statement indicates that the titles are at least in the process of being made and it is the first time Wii U Zelda is mentioned. Wii U Daily mentioned back in September that the title was going to be the biggest Zelda ever and that it would likely release in 2014.
This is also the first official mention of a 3D Mario for the new console. Nintendo released two 3D Mario titles for the Wii, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Both titles were financial and critical successes with the first title winning Gametrailers.com's Game of the Year Award in 2008.
