Batman: Arkham Origins is scheduled to be released on Oct. 29, and developer WB Montreal is prepared to give players a more advanced Batman game than what users have experienced in past games in the series. Senior producer of the game Ben Mattes recnetly gave a preview of the game to IGN and revealed that the developer worked hard to force players to step up their combat abilities to succeed in the new game.
"It's not enough to just mash the buttons and counter once in a while...we want you to be doing quick-fire gadgets, dodges, grapples, slams, the works; we want you to be getting 50-60 hit combos," said Mattes to IGN.
Mattes said that this change in combat will reflect the setting of the game, which is a prequel to the first two games in the series. Just as Batman had to learn how to fight more advanced foes, players must learn more streamlined and combo-heavy combat.
"It's year two. He knows how to fight, he's got the suit, he's donned the cowl, he goes out at night and he beats up bad guys. But generally speaking, it's organized crime-pimps, drug dealers, gang members. No one has thrown anything more challenging at him than a shotgun. That's all going to change the night that our game takes place."
The game's plot revolves around Batman wrestling with a $50 million bounty put on his head by Black Mask, which attracts villains such as Bane, Copperhead and Deathstroke. These villains play much differently than the legion of thugs. They are much better trained and will push Batman and the player to their limits. Mattes uses Deathstroke as an example of the more viscous and skilled boss fights that will be a part of Batman Arkham Origins:
"Deathstroke is an augmented, incredibly capable hand-to-hand melee fighter with access to great weaponry and technology. He's incredibly vicious, willing to kill, and has all the capabilities of Batman but none of the inhibitions."
Players will be able to simply spam the counter button or use tricks such as stunning foes with Batman's cape in order to defeat the villain, but must fight the boss with the right amount of timing, counters and dodges. This new level of difficulty and elaborate boss fights is how WB Montreal plans to make their entry into the series the most memorable yet, and gamers should definitely have Batman Arkham Origins on their radar.
