This weekend, the New York Philharmonic will feature a program of Johannes Brahms and Jean Sibelius at Lincoln Center.
The big story is that conductor Lorin Maazel will return to the NY Philharmonic for the first time since he left orchestra in 2009. He conducts Sibelius' Symphony No.2 and the Brahms Pianos Concerto No.1 with legendary Pianist Yefim Bronfman as the soloist. The concert will be performed in a matinee performance on Friday Jan. 18 at 2pm and on Saturday Jan. 19 at 8pm.
At the Julliard School, a program called Chamberfest 2013 will be presented featuring Franz Schubert's Trout Quintet and Brahms' Piano Quintet. The program will be played on Jan. 18 at 8pm.
The Chamberfest series continues Saturday at 3pm with Antonin Dvorak's Piano Quintet and Brahms' First String Quartet. At 8pm a third program will be performed with Felix Mendelssohn's Piano Trio and Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Quartet No.13. Free tickets are available for all three performances.
On Sunday Jan 20th Lincoln Center presents the Budapest Festival Orchestra featuring conductor Ivan Fischer and violinist Lisa Ferschtman. The program features works by Dmitri Shostakovich, Leonard Bernstein and Sergei Rachmanioff.
At the Metropolitan Opera, "La Rondine" by Giacomo Puccini continues its extraordinary run. The opera was hailed by critics. Donizetti's "Maria Stuarda" and Verdi's "Il Trovatore" also continue their runs with "Stuarda" being featured in a matinee performance that will be broadcast to thousands of theaters around the world.
"Vanya and Sonia And Masha And Spike" will continue at the Lincoln Center Theater, in a play by Christopher Durang.
