There are three top players in action between Thursday night and Friday morning (EST). Novak Djokovic, the top men's seed will battle Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic at 11 pm EST on Thursday, January 17.
Second-seeded Maria Sharapova will square off against 25th-seeded Venus Williams in the third round bout with the most star power. That match will begin at 7am EST on Friday.
Djokovic is looking for his third straight Australian Open Title. If he pulls of the feat, he would be the first man in history to do so. Djokovic has been the year-end #1 player on the ATP in both 2011 and 2012. The Serbian is the youngest player in the open era to reach the semifinals in all four Grand Slams at any point and in a row.
In addition to the last two Australian Opens, Djokovic won the 2008 tournament, his first Grand Slam victory. Djokovic has dispatched of Paul-Henri Mathieu (6-2, 6-4, 7-5 in round one) and Ryan Harrison (6-1, 6-2, 6-3 in round two) so far during this year's Australian Open.
The Czech player, Radek Stepanek, blew past Feliciano Lopez from Spain in the 2nd round 6-2, 6-2 ,6-4. Stepanek is currently ranked 31 in the world.
