In an effort to reshape it's brand and promote health and wellness, Coca-Cola is launching a new anti-obesity campaign starting tonight with the premiere of a two minute commercial which will air on CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. The ad, called "Coming Together" emphasizes that weight gain is onset through an excessive consumption of calories from a variety of foods and drinks not just including soda.

"Beating obesity will take action by all of us, based on one simple common sense fact: All calories count. No matter where they come from. Including Coca-Cola and everything else with calories. And if you eat and drink more calories than you burn off, you'll gain weight," says a narrator in the ad.

Coca-Cola's new marketing strategy also spotlights the healthier alternative drinks that it manufactures like Dasani and and Vitamin Water in addition to the calorie reduction it has made in their sodas.

This news takes most people by surprise as sugary drinks like soda have been scientifically linked to the cause and spread of obesity throughout America. As the epidemic of obesity continues to plague our nation, studies show that both obesity and soda consumption has doubled since the 1970s. On average Americans consume about 45 gallons of soda per year and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention place American obesity levels at 35.7 percent, up from 13 percent in 1962. Just one 20 oz. bottle of coke contains 65g of sugar alone while the American Heart Association suggests that 37.5g of sugar are digested daily.

According to CNN, Coca-Cola spokesman Ben Scheidler affirmed that Coca-Cola is dedicated to help fight obesity. "We've never been more committed to doing our part to help address the issue of obesity," he said, adding that "2013 is going to be a landmark year in terms of expanding partnerships and efforts to educate consumers about energy balance."
