It looks like President Obama will name foreign policy advisor Denis McDonough as his fifth chief of staff, the most important job position in the West Wing, according to Bloomberg news. The position became vacant last week when the president appointed Jack Lew to replace Timothy Geithner as the Secretary of the Treasury.
McDonough has a long list of credentials, making him an excellent candidate for this position.
Raised in Minnesota, he has been working under Obama as a foreign policy expert since he was an U.S. Senator. He also worked over Obama's foreign policy team during his run for president and was appointed as the National Security Council communications director.
Concerns aroused as news surfaced about McDonough's candidacy being that Obama seems to be appointing a surge of high-profile, white males to top positions in his second term. However, Obama has fired back at critics defending his record for promotion diversity within his administration stating:
"I'm very proud that in the first four years, we had as diverse, if not a more diverse, a White House and a Cabinet than any in history. And I intended to continue that, because it turns out when you look for the very best people, given the incredible diversity of this country, you're going to end up with a diverse staff and a diverse - a diverse team, and that very diversity helps to create more effective policy making, and better decision making for me, because it brings different perspectives to the table."
