The Denver Broncos lost a playoff game on Saturday and suffered another big loss Tuesday. ESPN is reporting that the San Diego Chargers will hire Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy to be the next head coach.

McCoy was also in the running for the Arizona Cardinals head coach opening, but canceled a trip to Arizona after accepting the San Diego offer.

For the second time in the past two seasons, Denver has lost a coordinator who became a head coach for another AFC West Division team. Dennis Allen, the current head coach of the Oakland Raiders, was a Denver defensive coordinator until last season.

McCoy spent four years with the Broncos and helped build multiple offensive schemes for the Denver offense. He initiated the read-option days of Tim Tebow's stint as starting quarterback and also the more versatile no-huddle offense run by Peyton Manning.

The Broncos won 11 straight games to end the regular season in 2012, but fell 38-35 in double overtime to the Baltimore Ravens last weekend in the NFL Playoffs Divisional Round. Including the tilt with Baltimore, Denver scored 30 ore more points in ten of its final 12 games. Manning threw for 300 yards in six of those contests.

McCoy takes over for Norv Turner, who was fired by the Chargers in late December. He had led the San Diego squad to a 55-40 record over six seasons, but a 24-24 mark since 2010.

The Chargers scored 30-plus points just four times all season and were in the bottom third of the league in passing & rushing yards.

San Diego is one of eight teams to have fired its head coach since the end of the 2012 season. The Kansas City Chiefs (Andy Reid), Buffalo Bills (Doug Marrone) and Cleveland Browns (Rob Chudzinski) have all been hired in that span, while the Cardinals, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles are yet to hire replacements for the departed coaches.
