Round One of the Australian Open continues on Monday night, with seven men's matches and nine for the women.

Twelve of the 13 seeded men who played on Monday are headed to the second round. Only 11th-seeded Juan Monaco lost in his opening match, as Andrey Kuznetsov beat him 7-6, 6-1, 6-1. Four seeded players will open their respective journeys Monday night, including number three Andy Murray.

Ten of the 11 seeded women shared the same fate: an opening-round victory. Thirty-second-seeded Mona Barthel was the lone loser among number-clad women entering the Australian Open. Five remaining women's seeds have their own first round bouts tonight.

Top seeded Novak Djokovic defeated Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-2, 6-4, 7-5 earlier on Monday as one of the 24 matches already finished. Djokovic will square off against American Ryan Harrison in the second round. Djokovic is aiming to become the first man to win three Australian Open Tournaments in a row.

Fourth-seeded David Ferrer of Spain will also face an American, Tim Smyczek, in round two. Ferrer is seeded fourth because fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal withdrew from the Australian Open from an injury and a separate illness.

On Sunday, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova each won their respective matches, both beating Russian opponents. Williams defeated Galina Voskoboeva 6-1, 6-0, while Sharapova played past her countrywoman Olga Puchkova 6-0, 6-0.

Twelve seeded men will play their first round matches on Tuesday, including Roger Federer (2), Juan Martin del Potro (6), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (7) and Richard Gasquet (9) from the top ten.
