The 14th Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. He was driven from Tibet into India by the Chinese Communist Party in 1959 and has lived in exile ever since, promoting peace, Tibetan independence and modern Buddhism.
Chinese authorities continue to pressure other countries and organizations against associated or hosting him, but in the last several decades he has been effective in spreading his message. In 1989, the Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace Prize.
