Update: Miss New York 2013 wins the Miss America Pageant 2013
The Empire State is looking for a victory at the 92nd Miss America pageant, live from Las Vegas tonight.
The last time New York won the Miss America crown was in 1984 with Vanessa L. Williams becoming the first Black Miss America. Unfortunately, Williams' reign didn't last the full year as she resigned after Penthouse magazine published nude photos of the singer and actress. Her reign was turned over to Miss New Jersey Suzette Charles.
Now in 2013, Miss York will be represented by Mallory Hytes Hagan, from Brooklyn. The 23-year-old became Miss New York 2012 after winning Miss New York City.
Heading to Las Vegas, Hagan's platform issue is Child Sexual Abuse Prevention.
As for her ambitions, Hagan hopes to obtain a degree in cosmetics and fragrance marketing and hopes to be a global marketing director for a cosmetics company in the future.
As Miss New York, Hagan will compete against 52 other contestants from the remaining 49 states as well as Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Washington D.C.
New York has won the Miss America crown three times, with Bess Myerson in 1945 as Miss New York City, Tawny Elaine Godin in 1976, and then with Williams.
The 2013 Miss America pageant will be live on Saturday at 9 p.m. EST on ABC. A "20/20" special is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. EST, showcasing the behind the scenes preparations leading up to the pageant.
