One of the most fascinating developments in the rumor mill during transfer season is the possibility of Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo returning to his original club Manchester United. However, is this idea even a good idea for the sides involved?
Ronaldo seems to be unhappy as of late with his current team. While he never actually revealed his discontent, there was a lot of inquiring about his contract situation as well as the locker room turmoil building in the Bernabeau. Not only so,Ronaldo's compatriot and coach, Jose Mourinho, could leave after this season and Ronaldo may just have another reason to leave the club.
It is always easy to speculate about major stars being traded from their clubs, but this story is usually not up to date in most cases. For example, Lionel Messi will likely never be linked to transfer rumors as it is a foregone conclusion that he is happy with his current club Barcelona. Ronaldo still has two years on his contract with Madrid but has not been offered an extension, which is one of the reasons for the debate in the first place.
According to The Sun, "Cristiano Ronaldo has waited 11 months for Real Madrid to give him a new deal" and the lack of action by the club could be an indication to the player that they are weighing their options with him and are uncertain about his future in Spain's capital.
Ronaldo has an expensive get-out clause of £810 million (€1 billion) which makes him an expensive option for most clubs. Transfer costs for him could cost as high as £122 million. Financially that puts a team like Manchester United in dire straits and could harm the team's chemistry.
Would the deal make any sense? According to Bleacher Report's John Schoch, the deal makes no sense and "there is simply no need for them to make a monumental deal that may end up hurting the club more than it helps it."
His colleague Tyler Conway disagrees and asserts that a return to Manchester would help Ronaldo's legacy. "Even in 2015, Ronaldo would likely be unquestionably the best player in the Premier League and would make the Red Devils a yearly championship favorite," say Conway.
The Sun published an article on Christmas day 2012 and also concluded that Ronaldo would be a good match on the squad. The publication concludes that "[Manchester United] lack the star quality that would take them forward and Ronaldo has a happy knack of scoring goals that turn draws into wins."
Ronaldo will face his former club this February in the two legs of the Champions League. He has already pledged not to celebrate any goals he scores on Manchester United.
