Elvis Presley may have died on August 16, 1977*, but hundreds of fans from all over the world still celebrated the King's 78th birthday at his Memphis home on Tuesday, according to an Associated Press (AP) report.

The gathering was attended by Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr., who spoke at the event. "Like coffee and cream, grits and gravy, peanut butter and bananas...Memphis and Elvis is a combination that was meant to be," he said.

Fans reportedly traveled all the way from Spain, France, Japan, Brazil, and England to attend the celebration, details the AP.

Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 and was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. The singer relocated to Memphis, Tennessee in 1948, where he kicked off his music career only six years later. Working with RCA*, the star released his breakthrough hit, "Heartbreak Hotel," in 1956.

Aside from the posthumous birthday party, the AP notes that Graceland launched a new tourist attraction in commemoration of the event highlighting Presley's "movies and concerts in Hawaii."

Elvis died at the age of 42 at his Graceland home from a cardiac arrhythmia, otherwise known as an irregular heartbeat.

The Rock and Roll celebrity's foray into film includes such films as Love Me Tender, Jailhouse Rock, Blue Hawaii, Viva Las Vegas, Spinout, Clambake, Double Trouble, and Change of Habit, among many others.
