As sure as a New Year dawns, so does a new series of Walking Dead episodes. AMC effortlessly whet fans' appetites with the release of a brand new Season 3 video preview containing several hints of what's in store for Rick and The Governor, but many questions still remain (via IGN).
At the end of the mid-season finale, Daryl found himself imprisoned by The Governor and surrounded by a mob of angry townspeople, driven to desperation by the shootout which shattered any sense of security among Woodbury's residents. Yet, the trailer shows Daryl, equipped with his trademark crossbow, on the run and dodging gunfire. Given that Merle shares his brother's predicament, it remains to be seen whether or not the Governor's former one handed lieutenant escapes as well.
Andrea, whose allegiance is still unclear, is shown approaching the prison, presumably as The Governor's emissary. Another short scene betrays some hostility between Woodbury's soldiers and Andrea as she returns to town. Is Andrea an enemy of The Governor at this point or are the guards simply unaware of who she is?
Michonne foretells The Governor's arrival at the prison, meanwhile Glenn tells her: "You and I can end this tonight." In another video previewing Season 3, Steven Yuen (Glenn) states: "I see this continued trajectory of asserting himself and growing up, but everyone is capable of letting their emotions drive them over anything." Glenn's aggressiveness in this new scene signals a newfound leadership role for the traditionally timid character.
Up until this point in the season, Hershel has used subtlety to influence the group and has been particularly supportive of Rick as he mourns the death of Lorie. The final scene breaks that silence as Hershel yells "Get back here!" to Rick. Without context, it's hard to judge what incites such urgency in Hershel, but it appears the group's power dynamics are shifting as each episode passes.
The Walking Dead Season 3 returns to AMC on February 10.
