Dharun Ravi, an ex-Rutgers University student, was sentenced to 30 days in prison following the conviction of his hate crime against former roommate, Tyler Clementi, who committed suicide after learning he was seen kissing another man through a webcam Ravi had installed in their dorm room.
Ravi was convicted of 15 crimes which includes invasion of privacy as well as bias intimidation--a hate crime--and tampering with evidence and was facing up to 10 years in prison.
On Monday however, a judge gave him 30 days of jail time followed by a three-year probation. According to the Guardian UK, judge Glenn Berman informed he would not recommend Ravi to be deported back to India.
In September of 2010, Ravi did not only use a webcam to spy on Clementi and a male partner who were privately kissing in a dorm room, but he also tweeted about it and showed the video scenes to other friends.
A couple of days later, Clementi jumped off the Washington bridge in New Jersey and died.
Although prosecutors were advocating for serious punishment, a series of letters from all around the nation including from President Obama and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie requested the judge to pardon Ravi.
