It seems that January 2013 will be a busy month for Manchester United. Rumors indicate that Sir Alex Ferguson is interested in moving his keeper David De Gea to Real Madrid and is also interested in reacquiring Cristiano Ronaldo. While most of these rumors are mere speculation, it seems that one rumor might actually have some substance.
According to German publication Bild, United is closing in on Polish Strikers Robert Lewandowski. According to the news, Lewandowski's current club Borussia Dortmund will let their signature striker leave for an 18 million pound deal in the summer. United would offer him a five-year contract that is worth 20.5 million pounds (4.1 million pounds per year).
This is not the first time Lewandowski's departure from the Bundesliga has made news. According to UK publication The Daily Mail, Lewandowski told friends that he would be leaving Dortmund. His contract is set to expire at the end of next year and a move to the Premier League would double his wages. He is currently making 2 million pounds a year playing for Dortmund.
The move would help Manchester United tremendously. They do have Robin Van Persie and Javier Hernandez playing well up top with Wayne Rooney behind them, but Van Persie is in his 30s and has been prone to injury. Danny Welbeck has not developed particularly well for Manchester and the 24-year-oold Lewandowski would certainly suit them for the future. Additionally, the purchase of the Polish striker instantly reunites him with new acquisition Shinji Kagawa. Lewandowski has scored 10 goals in 16 Bundesliga matches and a total of 14 in 23 matches of all competitions. He has four goals in the Champions League.
