Several contenders for the coveted role of Christian Grey in the upcoming film adaptation of E.L. James' bestselling erotic thriller '50 Shades of Grey' currently star as superheroes on TV or on the big screen. However, a recent addition to this list of attractive actors doesn't quite fit the bill of the sexy millionaire dominating character.
While Chris Hemsworth, star of 'Thor' and 'Red Dawn,' may have the build to play Christian, his past roles as a buff superhero/military type don't exactly match the description to play the coveted role. Celeb Dirty Laundry said it best, Hemsworth "has become known for playing the burly-superhero-save-the-world type of character--something that Christian Grey definitely is not."
Hemsworth, who will be reprising his role as the hammer-wielding god in 'Thor: The Dark World,' doesn't seem as eager to play the role as some other contenders seem to be. According to Gather Entertainment, the Aussie actor appeared uncomfortable as he read lines from the novel during a recent interview.
Of course, Hemsworth would also face tough competition from fan favorites Ian Somerhalder ('The Vampire Diaries'), Matt Bomer ('White Collar'), Stephen Amell ('Arrow') and Henry Cavil ('Man of Steel'). During a recent Latinos Post fan poll between Somerhalder, Bomer and Amell, Bomer held a slight lead over vampire-playing Somerhalder. However, 'Arrow' superhero Amell has also led in several polls.
Either way, casting decisions for the role of Christian Grey and his female love interest Anastasia Steele are still a ways away. The British author has told reporters on several occasions that casting decisions won't be decided until the screenplay is written and a director is chosen. The project now consists of producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti, along with screenwriter Kelly Marcel.
Speculation over casting has run wild since Universal Pictures and Focus Films purchased the rights to the film earlier this year. The books, which shot to international success, were originally based on 'Twilight' fan fiction.
The first proposed film in the series, '50 Shades of Grey,' has not set a theater release date yet.
