In a tribute to the lives lost during the tragic Sandy Hook school shooting on Friday, Saturday Night Live decided to open its final broadcast of the year with a children's chorus singing "Silent Night." The comedic show, which is not known to make serious exceptions to any news, has received praise for its touching gesture.
Dressed in matching red robes, members of the New York City Children's Chorus gave an angelic rendition of the religious hymn. The group, which later joined musical guest Paul McCartney in singing "Wonderful Christmas Time," sweetly sang the refrain, "Sleep in heavenly peace."
The SNL Christmas special included various guest, including host Martin Short, Samuel L. Jackson, Alec Baldwin, Tom Hanks, Kristen Wiig, Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the episode matched its second highest ratings of the season.
Apart from the chilling and beautifully haunting cold opening, the episode included some other memorable moments. 'Django Unchained' actor Samuel L. Jackson appeared in an unbilled cameo in the sketch "What Up With That?" where he dropped what sounded like several expletives. Appearing to be annoyed at being interrupted by host Kennan Thompson, Jackson apparently said "f-k" to which Thompson responded, "C'mon, Sam. That cost money!"
The actor later took to Twitter to clarify. "I only said FUH not F-K! K was sposed to cut off da BULLS-T, blew it!!" he tweeted along with a photo of himself looking horrified.
SNL returns on January 19, 2013 with first-time host, 'Silver Linings Playbook' actress Jennifer Lawrence.
