Netflix has officially ordered episodes of the “One Day At A Time” remake. The classic sitcom by the legendary Norman Lear will return to the screen for 13 episodes after 40 years.
Deadline revealed that “One Day At A Time” will co-star Emmy and Oscar winner Rita Moreno. Gloria Calderon Kellett (How I Met Your Mother) and Mike Royce (Everybody Loves Raymond) wrote the script and will executive produce, together with Lear, Michael Garcia and Brent Miller.
Variety revealed that Lear joined discussions for the potential reboot of the sitcom beginning in January 2015. At the time, he said that he already has potential cast members. He mentioned that he has plans to introduce some adjustments to the series.
“I just love the idea because I don’t see enough of that representation on the air in any place. I don’t mean to say it doesn’t exist – I don’t see it any place. There isn’t enough of it, and I think it’s a rich idea,” Lear said about Latino families on TV.
The comedy focuses on a Cuban-American family, with an ex-military mother who recently separated and exploring her new single life together with her teenage daughter and tween son. Schneider, played by Moreno, will take on the role of the Cuban-born grandmother who will be helping the single mom lead her changed life. The multi-camera show will feature three generations living in the same house and their respective relationships and activities. In the Netflix remake, Schneider will be the only white character on the show, Hollywood Reporter wrote.
Sony Pictures TV will be the studio, while Act III Productions, Snowpants Productions and Small Fish Studios, together with Sony TV will produce the show.
The original “One Day At A Time” was developed by Lear, while Allan Manings and Whitney Blake served as the show creators. The series aired on CBS for nine seasons from 1975 to 1974, starring Bonne Franklin as the separated mom, with co-stars Valerie Bartinelli, Mackenzie Phillips and Pat Harrington.
Moreno is represented by Innovative Artists. Kellett is repped by UTA and Odenkirk-Provissiero. Royce is represented by UTA.
“One Day At A Time” will join other multi-camera comedies on Netflix like “Fuller House” and “The Ranch.” It is also a continuation of the existing relationship between Sony TV and Netflix. The official launch date of the comedy series is yet to be announced. However, Netflix has several other shows in development, so it might take a while before the premiere.
