Do the Los Angeles Lakers Deserve Heavy TV Viewership?

The Los Angeles Lakers aren’t exactly the team that is hot in the NBA right now but the question going on is why the “Lake Show” continues to be featured on national TV.

The obvious reason is that the NBA wants to cover Kobe Bryant as much as possible considering it is his last year. However, would that be enough reason for the NBA to focus its attention on the retiring NBA cager?

NBA fans will likely debate on this matter but there is no denying that Kobe is pretty popular. He isn’t exactly putting on the same show as he has been known from his peak years but that glimmer of hope that he will do something special before hanging up his sneakers remains up in the air.

For someone in the caliber of Bryant, it is understandable why networks are trying to cover as much of Kobe as they can. However, some feel that such is depriving more deserving teams that should be given exposure.

Teams such as the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, or even the San Antonio Spurs have been forced to give way though it seems that none of them would really complain. That is as long as their teams get TV coverage as well.

Looking at it at from another angle, would such be good for the Lakers? From a business aspect, maybe yes, but if one sees how the team is faring, it does place some players and head coach Byron Scott in a bad light.

Exposure means seeing the shortcoming of the ballclub, one reason perhaps why players like rookie D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle and Scott have been always on news headlines.

The write-ups are of course a mix of good and bad stuff but then again, that is what you get for being part of the limelight. They are included in Kobe Bryant’s ride and it does not always follow that feedback would be positive.

This is not of course to say that the NBA and the networks should show less of the Lakers. It is just that the exposure for the purple and gold team is going a bit overboard.

The NBA may want to somehow give other teams a chance. There are other teams humming out there but their milestones take a backseat for a team that is the second worst in the league right now.

The move is of course out of the hands of the fans and likely the NBA. It is all about ratings and what TV networks feel will generate revenue. As it stands now, the Lakers are that team.
