Thursday's episode of 'Grey's Anatomy' left several stories hanging in the balance after Bailey (Chandra Wilson) failed to show up at her wedding and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) finally went through his risky hand surgery. The episode, entitled 'Run Baby Run,' also saw some major developments for Christina (Sandra Oh) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) as they navigate through their quickie divorce.
The episode, which was the show's mid-season finale, was very relationship centric, focusing on the many couples, friendships and work relationships at Seattle Grace-Mercy West Hospital.
Dr. Meredith Grey, Dr. Derek Shepherd and Lizzie Shepherd
Sisters-in-law Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Lizzie (guest star Neve Campbell) butt heads as they try to convince Derek to go through with a risky hand surgery that will force Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Jackson (Jesse Williams) to remove nerves from both of Lizzie's calves. The two have never been close and Lizzie isn't a fan of how distant Meredith has been with the rest of Derek's family. While the Shepherd siblings finally come to terms with Derek's surgery, Meredith must come to terms with a new family dynamic she isn't used to.
Derek and Meredith also try to adjust to the news that Meredith is expecting their first biological child together. It's going to be an uphill battle for both, as Meredith has had miscarriages in the past. Neither has told anyone of the pregnancy and the two remain at odds at what to do. In the end, Meredith decides to bond with her new sister-in-law and spills the news of the pregnancy.
Dr. Miranda Bailey and Dr. Richard Webber
Bailey is having a serious case of cold feet as her wedding to fiancé Ben (Jason George) inches closer and closer. While she's teased mercilessly by some of her colleagues, she finds some reassuring comfort from mentor Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) who helps her work out her insecurities. Richard knows that Bailey is worried about her marriage lasting (after her divorce to her first husband) and lets her scrub in the morning of her wedding to calm her nerves.
Ever the good friend, Richard also shows up to Miranda's house to pick her up for the ceremony. However, on the way to the wedding Richard receives news that his wife, Adele (guest star Loretta Devine), is critical and heading to the hospital. The two head back to Seattle Grace, where Bailey steps up and takes over Adele's care as a returned favor to Richard's help. However, in taking up Adele's case, Bailey fails to show up at her own wedding, leaving fiancé Ben wondering if she actually wants to get married.
Dr. Christina Yang and Dr. Owen Hunt
Christina's relationship with her estranged husband Owen has been rocky at best. After he cheated on her with a random woman and the plane crash that left her with severe PTSD, the two have not been able to mend their relationship. In last week's episode, Owen dropped an even bigger bombshell when he asked Christina for a divorce.
While it seemed that Owen was just over their relationship, Christina finds out that the real reason behind the divorce is the lawsuit some doctors have made against the hospital, where Owen is Chief of Staff. Frustrated and angry, Christina confronts Owen about the divorce and finds out that he feels responsible for the crash that almost ended her life.
However, things seemed to pick up when Christina talked to him one last time before heading over to Bailey's wedding. She asked him if he really wanted to end their marriage and admitted to returning to Seattle to see if they could work things out. The episode ended on a high note as the two were seen kissing in the attending's lounge.
Dr. April Kepner and Dr. Jackson Avery
It's clear that April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson aren't fully over each other since breaking things off last week. In preparation of Bailey's wedding, April convinces Jackson that they should both take dates to the event so they're not tempted to get back together. April picks out Jackson's date, intern Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton), while Jackson picks intern Shane Ross (Gaius Charles) as April's date.
The plan seems to work, but may end up backfiring on April, as Jackson appears particularly attracted to his new date.
Dr. Alex Karev and Intern Dr. Jo Wilson
Pediatrics doc Karev (Justin Chambers) has taken intern Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) under his wing after working with her on a complicated baby case in "Love Turns You Upside Down." Following in the footsteps of his mentor, Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), Karev decides to throw Jo into a surgery removing adhesions on a small boy with stomach issues. However, Jo's nerves get the best of her and she botches the surgery forcing Karev to take over and kick her out of the OR.
Fearing that she'll be fired for her mistake, Jo rats out Karev to Arizona and tells her that she thinks Karev threw her under the bus to get her fired. Arizona then confronts Karev and tells him that he needs to become a better teacher to his interns. He, of course, doesn't take being tattled on very well and tells Jo that she's completely burned the bridge with him.
To make the situation even more awkward, Karev and Jo are forced to go to Bailey's wedding as dates when Jackson and his date Stephanie set them up.
Dr. Callie Torres and Dr. Arizona Robbins
Callie's relationship with wife Arizona seems to be on the road to recovery after the fatal plane crash in May left Arizona with an amputated leg. Things between the two doctors have been rocky, with both coping with their new realities in different ways. However, it looks like the two have made some progress after Callie has an outburst telling Arizona that the world doesn't always revolve around her and her amputated leg. After the scuffle, Callie and Arizona attend Bailey's wedding as bridesmaids.
