Carlos Condit may have suffered a big blow when he lost to Robbie Lawler at UFC 195 via split decision, something that has raised some eyebrows, but such should not be something that pushes him towards the area of retirement.
Condit is clearly a picture of frustration right now after the results of UFC 195. Despite the fact he doubled the strikes of Lawler, such was not enough to land him a win via decision.
Even he claims his rant of retirement (via the Bleacher Report) was not something done out of his emotional state, not too many are buying it. The obvious is that Condit is hurting inside, disappointed for not winning the title over Lawler. But then again and as he mentioned, fights should never be left to the judges since no one can tell how judges will see it.
Somehow, it calls to mind Brandon Rios. After losing via TKO to Timothy Bradley Jr. back in November, Rios did ponder on retirement. He eventually got over the loss and took it all back. Could Condit do the same?
For his part, Lawler seemed to be unsatisfied with the outcome as well. In fact, he was even open to the idea of potentially having a rematch with Condit just so that the latter would re-think his plans of retiring.
That seems like a reasonable offer though it does carry some complications.
One is that it was already stated before the UFC 195 tiff that it would be Tyron Woodley who would be up next for the winner of the Lawler vs. Condit match.
It remains to be seen if UFC president Dana White would stick with the original plan or make sudden changes with the close match turning out a controversial result.
Controversial as it may seem in the eyes of many, here are the numbers as far as strikes made by Lawler and Condit. Lawler had about 92 strikes while Condit almost doubles it at 176. But then again, strikes are not the only things that judges are likely to be looking at.
The fight was a close one to call and such made it harder to judge. The Bleacher Report says that three of the judges ruled in favor of Lawler while two called it a draw.
With that said, Condit may be feeling that he is unable to do enough to vie for a title reign. That could be the case for now but given a couple of more weeks to months to allow him to get over that loss, let us see what tune Condit will be humming by then.
