WARNING: MAJOR "STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS" SPOILERS AHEAD!
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was released just last week, and fan theories about the new character Rey have already been making their rounds on the internet.
Rey is introduced in the film as an orphan scavenger living in abject poverty, waiting for her family to save her from loneliness. Throughout the film, there have been hints as to who she's waiting for.
Below are the Top 4 Rey Theories.
- Rey Theory 1: She's Luke Skywalker's Daughter
This is perhaps the most popular, and most obvious answer to the mystery surrounding Rey's parentage. The latter part of the film pointed heavily to her connection to Anakin and Luke when she touched their lightsaber.
Maz Kanata hinted as much when she tells Rey that the family she's waiting for in Jakku isn't coming back for her. She also tells Rey that her destiny lies ahead of her. The last scene also sees her holding out the lightsaber to Luke, and they both exchange meaningful looks, suggesting a father-daughter connection.
Her story and Luke's story are also too parallel for it not to mean something. She and Luke both grew up in a desert planet without knowing their parents. They are both good pilots. Of course, there's the connection with the Force.
If this is true, then the next film could introduce her mother, which in the Expanded Universe novels is Mara Jade, who Luke married but dies eventually, according to Mashable.
- Rey Theory 2: She's The Daughter of Han Solo and Commander Leia
She could also be Kylo Ren's secret sister and that she got her strong connection to the Force from Leia. The Luke Skywalker theory could only be a diversion.
Rey's and Han Solo's immediate connection at the start is undeniable. She drove the Millennium Falcon as if she were a young Han Solo. Chewie even adores her and becomes attached to her after Han is killed.
There's also that hug with Leia at the end, suggesting another familial connection. In addition, Carrie Fisher's daughter in real life, Billie Lourd, is the same age as Daisy Ridley (Rey).
As noted by Hypable, she's also as witty and as bold as Leia.
Her vision from the lightsaber - a little girl amid corpses, a masked hand reaching for her, her sobbing in Jakku - could also be repressed memories from a time when she was training as a Jedi under Uncle Luke.
- Rey Theory 3: She's Obi Wan's Granddaughter
This theory came from the voice of old generation Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) saying "Rey" in the lightsaber vision. This would mean that Obi-Wan had a secret relationship, and that Rey is his lovechild. What makes this more plausible is that the lightsaber did spend some time under Kenobi's wing.
- Rey Theory 4: She's The Daughter Of...No one Important
This perhaps offers a deeper connection to fans, who want to feel like the Force isn't just powerful for specific blood lines.
The debate continues until "Star Wars Episode VIII" arrives in May 2017.
