IGN just featured an exclusive first look at "Game of Thrones'" 20-minute animated feature on the Dance of Dragons, which provides fans with an awesome sneak peek into how the Targaryen civil war transpired and a telling of Westeros history.
HBO's home video boxsets for "Game of Thrones" offer a myriad of attention-grabbing special features, but as noted by Winter Is Coming, the Season 5 set could be the best of them all.
The history of Westeros involves a ton of details, but in a nutshell, the Dance of Dragons, which is part of the "Game of Thrones: Season 5 Blu-ray" set, is about the events following the death of King Viserys I. Following his demise, his sons, the half siblings Aegon II Targaryen and Rhaenyra Targaryen, forge a war over who is the worthy heir to the Iron Throne.
The story of the Dance of Dragons has been described as so rich in detail that it could be a series of its own. However, as of the moment, author George R.R. Martin has reportedly only one story set at the time of the Dance, which is part of his "The Princess and the Queen" novel released in the anthology Dangerous Women. Meanwhile, he has written "The Rogue Prince", which is a prequel to the novel.
Martin is scheduled to include a complete history of the Targaryen House in "Fire and Blood."
As for the Dance of Dragons featurette, it was penned by Dave Hill, with Lindeman & Associates' Adam Vadnais standing as conceptualizer and producer.
Hill discussed in a statement to IGN how the team came up with the Dance of Dragons video for the "Game of Thrones: Season 5 Blu-ray".
"When HBO and Adam Vadnais broached the idea of adapting The Dance of Dragons for the Blu-ray special features, I was thrilled. I loved the story as George had written it and felt honored to help bring an animated version to the fans," Hill said.
"Every year, I try to keep the scripts worthy of the incredible work that I know to expect from Adam and his team. This year, more so than ever, they've set the bar astronomically high with the Dance of Dragons featurette. Winter will eventually come, but not the day that Adam and his team fail to amaze me," he added.
Narrated by Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell in "Game of Thrones" Season 4), the Dance of Dragons video shows how Prince Aemond, together with his dragon Vhagar, battled his uncle Prince Daemon and the dragon Caraxes over the lake outside Harrenhal. The Dance of Dragons was made together with other actors who previously appeared and were killed in past "Game of Thrones" seasons such as Kerry Ingram (Shireen Barathon), Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen), Mark Addy (Robert Baratheon), Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark) and Jack Gleeson (Joffrey Baratheon).
The "Game of Thrones: Season 5" Blu-ray is slated for release on March 15, 2016.
