Back in October, the Minnesota Timberwolves were experimenting on 2014 NBA Rookie of the Year playing the two-guard position.
Interim head coach Sam Mitchell tried Wiggins out at the position where the sophomore player admitted that he saw the advantages of playing the position.
Apparently, such wasn’t taken seriously though there may be implications in play right now. These include seeing veteran Kevin Martin as the unfortunate casualty.
According to NBA.com, Martin is on the table and could soon find himself donning a new jersey. Zach LaVine has picked up the scoring cudgels while Wiggins is also doing fine playing the shooting guard role. So with two young stalwarts manning the position, such leaves Martin out of the equation.
The sudden turn of events does come a bit of a surprise though Martin’s numbers are not that impressive. Martin has proven the ability to score in bulk but so far, he has managed to average only 12.7 points per outing and has been shooting miserably at only 36.7 percent.
Martin doesn’t carry a hefty salary ($7 million) this season and doesn’t really show a raise next season as well ($7.4 million), according to the Bleacher Report. Overall, it seems that Minnesota feels they can free up more minutes for LaVine and Wiggins or probably get someone better than the 32-year-old veteran who can score and defend better.
With that said, it remains to be seen who would take the chance on Martin though there is word that a former team could be interested in taking him back in – the Sacramento Kings.
SB Nation hints that the Kings could be bringing back Martin with Caron Butler possibly moving out. But the question is on whether such is a right move.
While Martin has proven himself as a scoring option, his durability and lack of defense are put into question. Reeling in Martin doesn’t carry a lot of advantages for the Kings and the only reason why he may be taken in is to fill in the vacancy which Butler may likely create.
Reports have it that at least two teams are already discussing about a potential trade for the 12 year veteran and the Kings could be one of them.
Could the Denver Nuggets be the other team? Well head coach Michael Malone seems to have high regard for Martin based on a recent interview.
"You look at his numbers every year, very efficient offensive player," says Malone via NBA.com. "He has the uncanny ability to draw contact and get to the line."
