There will be a rare full moon on Christmas Day this year. It will be the very first full moon on Christmas Day since 1977. The extraordinary event will not happen again until 2034.
All Full Moon during the month of December is called the Full Cold Moon, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac. Such full moons are also called the Long Nights Moon by some Native American tribes.
The Full Moon will be in its fullest size at 6:11 a.m. on Dec. 25 across the world, NASA's moon expert Fred Espenak revealed to The Weather Channel. For those in the U.S., the rare Full Moon will be best viewed on Christmas Eve. The occurrence of the unusual Full Moon on Christmas was also confirmed to ABC News by a NASA spokesperson.
Words about the bizarre Full Moon were first floated by The Independent as early as November as it noted a John Lewis Christmas ad released around the time. The ad was about a young girl called Lily who one night find a man on the moon while looking through her family telescope. Since then, she watched the man as he goes about his chores all alone up on the moon. Lily became determined to let the man know that someone on Earth is thinking of him. The background music was "Half the World Away" performed by Aurora. The original song was by Oasis.
The Independent noted at the time that people celebrated a Full Moon on 2004 but that was incorrect. The Full Moon achieved its fullest size on Dec. 26 at the time. People then celebrated another Full Moon during Christmas of 2007, which was again incorrect. It actually fell on Christmas Eve, The Independent noted. The next Full Moon on Christmas will happen on 2034, 2053 and then 2057.
The news outlet further noted that the Full Moon for this year will take place on 11.11 GMT on Dec. 25. This means that the moon will not be technically full in the U.S. People can check when the Christmas moon will be fullest in their location by checking Timeanddate.com.
Speaking of a Full Moon on Christmas, there is actually an entire genre of Christmas-themed horror movies perfect for the event, as noted by NPR. Some of the titles are "Silent Night, Deadly Night," "Silent Night, Bloody Night," "Jack Frost," "Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys;" A Cadaver Christmas" and "Silent Night, Zombie Night." The most recommended is the 1974's "Black Christmas" which was considered as the first slasher films in the U.S., Hannah Foreman of Woman in Horror Month told NPR. Then, of course, there are "Gremlins," "Black Christmas" and "A Christmas Story." The most recent of the Christmas-themed horror movies are "Krampus" and the Finnish film "Rare: Exports: A Christmas Tale," NPR reported.
