Official release date for the much-awaited "Avatar 2" will be announced pretty soon. Director and producer James Cameron had already reviewed the scripts of not just the second film in the franchise, but also the third and the fourth films.
"I'm in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now," Cameron told the Entertainment Weekly in an exclusive interview. With "pass through," he explained he meant that he is just in the process of "just refining." "That's in parallel with the design process. The design process is very mature at this point. We've been designing for about a year and half. All the characters, settings and creatures are all pretty much set," Cameron revealed.
Everything about the "Avatar 2" had been kept under wraps. The most recent official announcement from 20th Century Fox was in June 2014. The studio announced at the time that the yet to be titled Avatar sequels will be filmed back to back. "Avatar 2" will be released in December 2016, as posted on Avatar Movie website. "Avatar" 3 will be release in December 2017 and the third film will follow in 2018. All the three films will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau for Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment.
Cameron has big shoes to fill with the much anticipated "Avatar 2." "Avatar" is the highest-grossing film of all time, with nearly $2.8 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time.
"Avatar" also won Golden Globe awards for Best Motion Picture and Best Director. It was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director for the Academy Awards. Moreover, it won Oscars for art direction, visual effects and cinematography.
Cameron shared with Entertainment Weekly that making the "Avatar 2" and the rest of the sequels was actually harder than making the first film. "Because you have to challenge yourself. Expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn't just some big fluke the first time," he said. "So we've got to deliver. I've created a nice rod for my own back," the director added.
As previously announced by Cameron, he has set Sigourney Weaver to return in the subsequent three "Avatar" sequels. Also confirmed to make comeback are Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Stephen Lang.
"Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens. We're good friends who've always worked well together, so it just feels right that she's coming back for the Avatar sequels," Cameron announced at the time. As everybody knew that her character, Grace Augustine, died in "Avatar." Weaver will be playing a different and a more challenging roles in the upcoming films, Cameron added. "We're both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration," the director added.
