Back in 2012, before the sale of LucasFilm to Disney, George Lucas was planning on expanding the "Star Wars" universe even further with a live-action TV series.
According to Movie Web, the working title for the series was "Star Wars: Underworld" and that before the sale, Lucas already had about 100 scripts written for the series.
Game Spot reports that the show was meant to tell the story from the events of "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" to "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope". However, it has to be said that the animated series "Star Wars: Rebels" already covers some parts of that story. Nevertheless, there is so much left to cover, so much so that "Underworld" still could work.
The best news for "Star Wars: Underworld" is that LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy has recently spoken about the project, and it seems to have been given the green light. Kennedy recently stated that the studio did put a lot of time into the project and that she has read some parts of the material, and it looks like something that LucasFilm could look into for a future project.
Rumors about the show have stated that the producer attached to the project, Rick McCallum, took a lot of inspiration from the HBO series "Deadwood". With that being said, it seems like the project was to originally have a darker, edgier feel to it.
Back in 2008, Lucas was interviewed about the possible series, and he stated that he was planning on having a "New Hope" feel to it. Lucas confirmed that there would be a lot more talking and less action compared to the prequel trilogy. The legendary directory / screen writer states that it would have somewhat of a soap opera feel to it.
Another rumor floating around is that Netflix is preparing for a "Star Wars" series for a future date. There could actually be something behind this rumor since Netflix does already have four Marvel series showing or already scheduled. Since Disney owns both Marvel and LucasFilm, putting the "Star Wars" series on Netflix wouldn't be impossible.
Of course one of the main reasons for so much hype about a possible "Star Wars" live-action series is because the new movie "Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens" is less than a week from premiering.
At this time, this is still in speculation and no actors, directors or even release dates for the series have been confirmed. Fans will just have to wait for some concrete news. Until then "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" opens in theatres Dec. 18, 2015.
