What do you get when you take 5 from 9?
That's the number of contestants remaining on "The Voice" after it eliminated not one but 5 contestants from a pool of 9 in the "most brutal results episode ever," as noted by Yahoo! Music's Lyndsey Parker.
"The top three instantly advancing to next week's top four finale were Team Adam's 'unicorn' Jordan Smith, and Team Blake's country contenders Emily Ann Roberts and Barrett Baber," Parker reported.
Jeffery Austin of Team Gwen made it to the top four after beating Team Pharrell's Madi Davis in the Twitter vote, to her fans' chagrin. Austin earned 45% of the votes while Davis only got 23%.
However, it appeared that her nerves got the better of Davis and showed in her performance of Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over," which probably explained why Austin prevailed over her. Austin, of his part, did not help by delivering a stellar performance.
"Jeffery powered through a performance so dynamic, so ferocious, it almost made Jordan Smith's 'Somebody to Love' from Monday night look like Braiden singing Bread," Parker observed. "His cover of Ed Sheeran's 'Make It Rain' rained blood, sweat, and tears all over that NBC soundstage."
The first three eliminated "right off the bat" were Braiden Sunshine, Amy Vachal, and Shelby Brown. Afterwards, Davis, Austin, and Zach Seabaugh came on to perform for their lives.
Seabaugh sang Tim McGraw's "Live Like You Were Dying," according to New York Daily News. However, his nerves also showed in his performance as his rendition had shaky spots amidst the solid ones. Despite this, he earned more Twitter votes than Davis at 32%.
With that, the coaches battling for the crown would be Team Adam, Team Blake, and Team Gwen. With the country singer coming into the finals with two bets, it appears he's likely to score another win on the show. Shelton had won in four of the previous 8 seasons, while Pharrell's ward emerged victorious in Season 8 of "The Voice."
Which contestant do you think will win Season 9?
As the show's current season winds down to a close, Shelton recently commented that he wished girlfriend Stefani would stay on the singing competition. The "Used to Love You" singer is quitting the show after the current season ends to work on her resurgent career.
"I don't want Gwen to not be on the show," the musician told People. "Why can't we have a fifth coach?"
What do you think of Shelton's suggestion?
