The "Winds of Winter" release date is still generally unknown up to now. However, although author George R.R. Martin has refused to say anything about the release, he is opening up about how he wants the book to be written. Apparently, he doesn't want any other writer but him to finish the book.
GRRM was asked by a fan on his blog whether he would want Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck to write for "A Song of Ice and Fire". The fan asked the question because Martin had attended Abraham and Franck's book signing for "The Expanse", according to The Inqusitr.
Martin's response to the fan?
"I don't see anyone else ever writing (legally) in that universe," Martin responded when the fan further asked if other writers could help.
The "Winds of Winter" author didn't provide any other details for his answer, but he knows that an author's opinion may not really matter. He said as much in a 2013 interview here.
Could that mean that "Winds of Winter" could be penned by other writers? That may seem unlikely since new rumors have surfaced that the "Winds of Winter" release date will now be on February 23, 2016, right before the airdate of "Game of Thrones" Season 6, according to Yibada.
Furthermore, Five Thirty Eight reported that tipster Jeff, or BrydenBFish, claimed that it's possible that "Winds of Winter" will be done by February to keep with the deadline, and that there is a remote possibility of the highly anticipated book being released before the television adaptation in April.
It appears that HBO wants Martin to finish the book too since they have postponed "Game of Thrones" Season 6 by a few weeks to allegedly allow Martin time to finish "Winds of Winter".
As for the author, while he admitted to being a very slow writer, he also seemed adamant on finishing the book before the "GOT" Season 6 premiere, as he reportedly canceled several public appearances and turned down the chance to pen an episode of "Game of Thrones" Season 5 to focus on "Winds of Winter".
The sixth season of "Game of Thrones" will come in four months' time, and while many thought the "Winds of Winter" release date will come before that, new rumors claim that the release of the book could be in spring at the latest.
Still, even if the book isn't complete yet and even if rumors are true that the novel will be released after "Game of Thrones" Season 6, it's better to anticipate the book in just a few months as opposed to years.
