A new teaser video and couple of promotional materials were recently featured by BBC for “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride.” The special holiday episode is set to premier on TV and cinema in January 2016.
The special holiday episode will place “Sherlock” stars Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) in 1895, ComicBook wrote.
The episode description stated that Thomas Ricoletti will be somewhat surprised to find his wife wearing her old wedding gown. It turned out that she committed suicide a few hours before. Mrs. Ricoletti’s ghost is now roaming the streets with the intention to seek revenge. Holmes, Watsons and their companions should use a new type of strategy and their wits to battle a different form of enemy and uncover the shocking truth about The Abominable Bride.
DenofGeek wrote that “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride” is scheduled to air on Jan. 1, 2016 in the United States and United Kingdom. The episode will also play in a number of theaters in the US. Tickets went on sale beginning Nov. 6, 2015.
The other trailer showed that the famous detective and his best friend who live on Baker Street will have a completely different setting. The two will be donning top hats and frock coats and travel via steam trains and horse-drawn carriages.
Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss spoke exclusively to Digital Spy at the MCM London Comic Con to share more details about the “Sherlock” Christmas Special. Gatiss confirmed that “The Abominable Bride” will generally be an original story, inspired by a reference in one of the stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle to one that Dr. Watson never wrote about. There will be a lot of details coming from the original stories, with a case referenced in the story regarding Ricoletti with the club foot and his abominable wife. The upcoming show will mostly be inspired by that story.
The Doyle story is “The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual,” which involves riddles, death and hidden treasures. Sherlock Holmes will particularly refer to the line about the Tarleton murders, the case of Vamberry, the wine merchant, the adventure of the old Russian woman, the affair of the aluminum crutch, and the full account of Ricoletti and his abominable wife.
Amanda Abbington described the Christmas Special as a proper gothic horror, while Gatiss described it as a Christmas ghost story that will be a treat to viewers for the holiday season.
