At the Spike TV Video Game Awards (VGA), Naughty Dog announced that its upcoming game 'The Last of Us' will launch on May 7, 2013. The veteran developer, whose legacy includes the Crash Bandicoot games on the PS1, the Jak & Daxter franchise, and Uncharted, first showed off The Last of US at E3 2012.
The game's synopsis reads, " The Last of Us is a game like no other. We've just begun to show you what's in store for Joel and Ellie as they travel across the post-pandemic United States. The drive to preserve humanity against the infection creates tension that pushes the limits of what constitutes being human. The story will explore the bond that forms between Joel and Ellie, and themes of loyalty, love, and redemption in ways never before experienced in entertainment. It's an emotional rollercoaster that plunges and twists into the depths of what it means to be human and what it takes to survive."
While The Last of Us enfolds includes zombie-like enemies into the mix, the player's interaction with enemy and friendly AI are perhaps the most striking aspects of Naughty Dog's latest effort. Gamers are given a choice to approach situations stealthily or with force, but unlike most other franchises, violence has a consequence. In the brief demo showcased at E3, each violent encounter is treated as a brutal struggle that provides an immediate response to the choices that players make on a moment-to-moment basis. Players must protect Ellie, but the friendly AI also assists Joel when the odds are stacked against his favor.
'The Last of Us' is one to watch, and may act as the Playstation 3's swan song as the end of the year ushers in a new generation of consoles.
