If you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain, well, the latest creation from Australian scientists can help out with at least one of those.
According to Australia's Department of Agriculture, its researchers have announced a new pineapple has been created that actually tastes like coconuts.
Scientists from a Queensland-based government agency were attempting to create a sweeter-tasting pineapple, but ended up creating this new variety of coconut-flavored pineapple, named AusFestival, by accident, Science World reported.
A team headed by senior horticulturalist Garth Senewski, sponsored by a commercial backer, had been working on the new pineapple variety for a decade. They hope to start planting the pineapples for commercial sale, and for blending into pina coladas, within the next two years.
The new creation has the potential to change the face of cocktail mixology as we know it, reducing the amount of ingredients needed to make a piña coladas, a favorite drink among hotels and vacation resorts.
To make piña colada cocktails, the process starts by taking rum, cream of coconut and pineapple juice and shaking them together with ice, before straining the mix into a glass.
However, this new AusFestival pineapple would eliminate the need for coconuts altogether in making the drink.
"Taste tests tell us that [it] is a winner - it has this lovely coconut flavor, which you won't find in any other pineapple in Australia," Senewski told the Australian Broadcast Corporation, via the Daily Mail. "It's sweet, low acid, very juicy," he added.
