Even though the TV series is gone, “Futurama” will be returning as a mobile game. “Futurama: Release the Drones” will be coming soon.
CNet reported that game developer Wooga, based in Berlin, Germany, announced that it is collaborating with Fox Digital Entertainment to turn the sci-fi cartoon series into a mobile game. The title of the game will be “Futurama: Release the Drones,” and will bring players on a trip. There will be several familiar characters such as Bender, Fry, Leela and other members of the Planet Express team who will battle an uneven trade war against shipping rival MomCo.
Gamers will have to link groups of delivery drones to solve puzzles with the ultimate goal of defeating MomCo, Wooga wrote in a blog post. The game will feature iconic places from the “Futurama” universe, showcasing various hazards and circumstances that will make the objectives challenging.
The storyline of the game will be co-written by Dave Grossman (The Wolf Among Us, Tales of Monkey Island), Jonathon Myers (Game of Thrones: Ascent) and Patric M. Verrone (original “Futurama” TV series). Fans expect that the storyline will be quite entertaining since some of the original people from the show will still be behind the new project.
Geek.com reported that Wooga previously made a lot of 2D puzzle games and hidden object games, so the upcoming title will most likely use the same concept and design. The game will reportedly be playable on both iOS and Android devices. There is not official release date at the moment, but more details and update are expected in the coming weeks.
The TV show “Futurama” aired from 1999 to 2003 on Fox. The series was continued by Comedy Central from 2008 to 2013. The series won two Emmy awards for “Outstanding Animated Program.” There is still no word whether some of the original voice actors from the TV series will be returning for the game model. Wooga currently offers free-to-play games, so “Release the Drones” is also expected to become available for free, although it is likely to feature several in-app purchases.
Engadget noted that “Futurama” is not the first name-brand entertainment to be revived as a mobile game. Other shows, such as “Mean Girls” and “Firefly” were also given the same treatment before.
Fans of “Futurama” are already excited to hear about the return of Bender and other favorite characters. Considering the simplicity of the game and Wooga’s previous release patterns, the upcoming title is expected to be launched in the next few months.
