The "Scandal" season 5 winter finale, titled "Baby, It's Cold Outside," ended on Nov. 19, 2015 with an explosive storyline. Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) filibustered in favor of funding for Planned Parenthood while Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) got an abortion without seeking the permission of President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn). Then again, for what could be the nth time, the two decided to end their relationship.
"There is no us. There is no Vermont, there is no jam, there is no future, not anymore," Olivia told Fitz despite him telling her that he had her moved in order to save "us." The president then told her: "You are worse than Mellie."
The fight started when Olivia did not show up to the big dinner and Fitz was really furious about her, accusing her of "running." The lover's quarrel which ensued next was a big, full-blown fight. There were accusations of manipulation and ineffectualness.
The episode ended with Olivia moving out of the White House and back to her apartment. She had a comfortable sweater on and had a new sofa delivered. She eventually sat on it and enjoys a big glass of wine on one hand. Snowflakes then started falling outside her window. She took everything all in, a content look on her face. She looks happy to be home, at least for Christmas. But the question is for how long?
Could this be the end for the two of them? "Scandal" returns to ABC on Feb. 11.
Elsewhere on social media, viewers were divided. Some praises writer Shonda Rhimes for a compelling storyline which tackles two controversial topics: Planned Parenthood and abortion.
Portia de Rossi, who played Elizabeth on the series, lauded Rhimes for "Scandal" season 5 winter finale. "This is a conversation we need to be having. I'm beyond proud of Shonda Rhimes for one of the bravest storylines I've ever seen," she said on Twitter.
Laverne Cox of "Orange is the New Black" also praised the writer. "Love that ShondalandTV never shies away from the important issues like women's health being under attack in this country right now," she tweeted.
Feminist Elizabeth Garcia cheered the show with a "Kudos." She said the episode showed and normalized the medical procedure of abortion.
And of course, as expected, Planned Parenthood was very grateful of Rhimes for "standing" with the advocacy and for being a "groundbreaking creator." Cecile Richards, president of the federation, had personally thanked Rhimes for "bringing this incredibly important issue to the bajillion people watching."
But then again there were those who expressed strong objections. A mom and wife on Twitter said: "Shame on you" "Scandal for promoting abortion. One Christian husband said: "that was an infomercial for Planned Parenthood with "Silent Night" music. Shameful." One Twitter user said that "Scandal" took a "disgusting turn" of events.
